Getting a tattoo in Bali is a right of passage. But, we aren’t talking about those messy, regrettable mistakes that you want to hide away for the rest of your life. Nuh uh, not here.
People travel from all over the world to work with local – or expat – artists, in one of the many famous tattoo studios, to create their dream tattoo.
Using Western equipment, trusted products and hygiene standards like those you would find back home, getting a tattoo in Bali doesn’t need to be the back alley, sketchy experience everyone imagines.
With luxury studios, highly qualified, award-winning artists, and a passion for the art all over the island, there are so many places to get amazing tattoos in Bali.
Before we get started on our favourite studios, we want to share some tips and tricks to make sure you have the most fun and safe tattoo experience in Bali.
- Hygiene – one of the most important things to consider when searching for a tattoo studio in Bali is hygiene standards.
Whether you visit beforehand to check out a space, or take a look at their online reviews, if you aren’t happy or comfortable with something throughout your appointment, it’s better to say no and leave, than to be left with an infection. - Artists – if you are looking for a particular style of tattoo, it’s worth doing some research. There are so many skilled tattooists on the island, and you are sure to find one that matches your aesthetic. Search Instagram and studio websites to narrow down the perfect studio for you.
- Pricing – pricing for tattoos vary from place to place. Depending on the skills, equipment and professionalism of the studio, you can be looking at anywhere between IDR600,000 to IDR1,500,000 starting rates. When you have done your research and found a studio, ask for a consultation so you can discuss the piece and pricing.
- Comfort – finally, you want to find a place where you are comfortable. Tattoos can be unpleasant enough as it is, don’t make it worse for yourself by being in a studio where you can’t relax. Find a place where you can enjoy the experience – despite being poked with needles.
- Aftercare – it’s all well and good getting a tattoo, but aftercare is another really important factor. Post tattoo you shouldn’t swim for up to at least 2 weeks, you must make sure the area is clean and dry, and you will need to apply aftercare cream to aid the healing process. If you are on holiday, it’s worth waiting until the end of your visit, so you don’t need to miss out on pool time.
