Goa Lawah

Goa Lawah Temple is a temple located in Pasinggahan Village, Dawan District, Klungkung Regency, Bali, which is about 40 km from Bali’s capital, Denpasar. Goa Lawah Temple is known to the public because there is a cave in the main part of the temple, which contains a colony of bats. This temple also became a focal point of the Kusamba War, a war between the Dutch East Indies army led by Major General Andreas Victor Michiels and the people of Klungkung led by Dewa Agung Istri Kanya.

There are several things you should pay attention to before entering Gua Lawah Temple, as this is a Hindu place of worship: You must wear a sarong and sash, as this is part of Balinese culture. Women who are menstruating are not allowed to enter the temple. Behave respectfully and do not make noise during traditional ceremonies. Do not climb the temple stairs or the entrance gate to the sacred cave. Do not walk in front of the worshippers. Do not sit or stand higher than the priest or the offerings placed on the designated table. Do not use flash photography or point your camera directly at the priest’s face. Smoking and littering are strictly prohibited.
